ASL
No, not ASL as in “Age, sex, location?” ASL as in American Sign Language! My class is going so well. I’m alrighty into the fourth week of it with a couple weeks to go (the final for the class is the day after I take the LSAT) until I start ASL 2. This summer is flying by, honestly. I’m going to be really happy when I only have class twice a week and no LSAT class on Monday and Wednesday nights. My work schedule will probably be two days a week - Monday and Wednesday - and I’ll work 10a-5p. American Sign Language is so interesting to me. I think it’s partially because our teacher is amazing, and partially because we’re not just learning the language, but Deaf Culture in general. I have a friend who is partially deaf, and I know being able to communicate with deaf people will be beneficial to me in the business world, so I’m glad I’m taking it. I went to my first silent meal this afternoon, and although I got very frustrated, I really enjoyed myself. The class TA was there, and when we were signing, she slowed down her fingerspelling (spelling out words instead of using the sign) so I could read (fingerspelling is hard to read at first) and repeated herself to make sure I understood. I sent her an email a few minutes ago to let her know that I really appreciated that. Then, next weekend, I bought tickets for Tom and I to go a musical here in town. I will get 2 contact hours (I need 5 for this semester) because they will be supplying an interpretor. I also plan to attend a couple church services with interpretors present. This class is one of probably a handful of classes that I’ve truly enjoyed while I’ve been in college, and I feel the same way about the professor. Despite the fact that he’s tenured, he still cares greatly about where the class is headed in the future and how he can help make the learning process easier and more fun for all of us.

i think it’s super awesome that you’re taking ASL. i know all the letters, but i don’t know how to actually speak with my hands. i find this super interesting and can’t wait to hear more about it.
