Those of us who have grown up (or remember the beginning of) the Computer Age (as I like to call it) know how fiercely technology has expanded since it’s debut. I hear stories all the time from my parents about what computers used to be like and how they actually lived without them (gasp!). Nowadays, though, I’m not sure the world would be able to function if we didn’t have computers to track shipments, take inventory, and communicate with people all over the world. Of course, the tasks that we use computers for far surpass the three I mentioned, but you get the idea.
I didn’t think I would ever need computer training – afterall, I’ve had a computer in my household for as long as I can remember. I used to fall asleep to the dialing noises when my dad would log onto the internet. I even remember having games on floppy disks! Needless to say, I thought I was set in the computer knowledge department. As a business major, I soon realized I would need to know more about computers than I did at the time.
Last summer, I enrolled in a basic computer course which tackled everything from the history of computers to Windows, Excel, etc. I loved that class so much – and it taught me a lot – but I wanted more information. So I took the advanced class and learned even more about Excel, Access, etc. I use the training I received in those two classes everyday at work and in the classroom. I also continue to encourage my mom to quash her fear of technology and learn something about the machine sitting in front of her!
Although I personally do not want to go into IT professionally, I do know that it takes a lot of training, hard work, and dedication. For those who are interested in pursuing a job utilizing their IT skills, Cisco certification is a great place to find resources! On the site, you can network with other IT people, get more information about career possibilities within the field, and learn about networking technology in general.
